UNIVERSALLY DESIGNED FAMILY HOUSE
EGERSUND, NORWAY
The family bought the dream plot close to the city centre, surrounded by buildings of significant heritage value. The challenge was that the existing house on the plot was too small to accommodate the family´s need for a universal designed family house.
The existing house had, through its lifetime, become a natural part of the built environment, and in respect of this careful relation to the surrounding buildings, we wanted to keep its main characteristics in the new house. The central common room in the new house are open and spatial. The room consists of entrance hall, kitchen, dining room, living room and access to all of the other rooms in the house. An open bridge flows through the room, held up by a single column containing the elevator.
This central element connects the different rooms and allows a variety of moods and activities to happen at the same time, together, but yet separately. All with the same exposure to the main view towards the city centre.
The house also consists of an apartment in the basement with a two stories heigh window tower to ensure good lighting conditions.
